What makes quiet places so special and unique? Standing in front of the Bowl Lake in Acadia National Park, I felt like I’d stumbled onto Acadia’s secret haven. This little lake in the far corner of the park is a lot more than just a pretty picture. It’s a place where the beauty of nature hits the pause button.

The Bowl Lake is one of the places that not everyone finds despite being right off the Bowl trail. It isn't long but challenging enough to give an impression that something special awaits at the end. I recall being on the Bowl trail, the wind rustling through the trees, and then, I felt the excitement in me because I knew that I was close. By the time I got to the lake it felt like I was entering a secret world of its own.

Camera in my hand, I managed to look for the right spot to settle beside the water. It was so calm that the trees and sky were reflected perfectly in it. It was so quiet the only sound that could be heard were the distant birds chirping. I was frozen for a minute, admiring everything that was happening. I almost did not take the picture because it felt as if I was intruding into the moment, you know? But, of course, I did, because taking such scenes is the essence of the whole thing.

The Bowl Lake isn’t the largest lake or the most visited one in Acadia and it doesn’t have to be. It has this subtle appeal that doesn’t need to shout out loud to be heard. I finished shooting and was on my way back along the trail feeling like I had witnessed something incredible. Even now, as I look at the photo, I feel instantly transported to that serene location. I was able to spend some time in a place that few people get to experience. And that is why it stays with me.
