Rain or Shine: How to Make Rainy Pet Portraits Magical

by Cheri Alguire

You wake up on photo day, look outside, and… rain. Before you grab your phone to reschedule, hear me out. Rainy days can be perfect for unique and memorable pet portraits. The soft light, shiny streets, and playful raindrops can turn an ordinary setting into something magical.

Stay Cozy and Comfortable

The key is keeping everyone happy. A cute umbrella, a covered porch, or even a tree with wide branches can give you shelter while still keeping that rainy-day feel in the background. If your pet doesn’t mind, a little raincoat or colorful bandana can add extra cuteness (and keep them drier).

Use the Soft Light to Your Advantage

Cloudy skies are like nature’s filter. The light is even and flattering, no harsh shadows on fur or squinting eyes. If the rain is light, you can step right into it and let the raindrops add sparkle. If it’s heavier, stick to covered spots but keep those wet streets or glistening leaves behind your pet for that “fresh rain” vibe.

Capture Real Reactions

Rain brings out personality! Some pets get the zoomies, some stop to sniff every puddle, and others give the most dramatic “why me?” look. These honest, unposed moments often make the best portraits. Be ready for the shake-off, the paw lift, or that split second they pause and look right at you.

Keep Sessions Short and Sweet

Rainy-day sessions don’t have to last long. A few quick shots are often all you need. Then head inside for a towel-off and maybe a treat (for both you and your pet).

Rain or shine, every day is a chance to capture the little quirks that make your pet special. Sometimes, the rain just makes those moments even sweeter.
