Any trek through the great American Southwest must include a visit to the awe-inspiring wonder that is New Mexico’s White Sands National Park. In fact, an area rich with centuries of history, White Sands took over 120 years from the first efforts to preserve it from development, starting in 1898. Later, in 1933, Congress made it a National Monument, and then finally it became a National Park in 2019.
If only those rippling dunes could speak, what stories would they tell? Here, at White Sands National Park, I was face-to-face with a vast horizon where earth meets sky. The dunes spread out like waves of light across the land, each ridge and ripple shaped by unseen winds. This wasn’t just sand—it was gypsum, an element unique to this desert landscape. Under a brilliant blue sky, the white sand dunes resembled a frozen ocean, stretching endlessly into the distance.
While setting up my camera, I was already enchanted by the place. Meanwhile, I walked along the ridges, moving slowly to avoid disturbing the delicate gypsum crystals. As I moved, I watched light dance across the surface. Each step connected me with the earth beneath, the dunes welcoming me as if I was an old friend.
I adjusted my lens, framing the gentle slopes toward the horizon, where dunes and sky met in perfect harmony. At the same time, I focused on capturing that feeling—the quiet, the emptiness, and yet, a sense of fullness in the stillness. What was it about this place that made it feel like it held the secrets of the earth?
After a few shots, I noticed faint tracks in the sand, perhaps left by a small creature crossing at night. The marks seemed insignificant, almost hidden, yet they told a story of life and survival in this vast, silent beauty.
I felt grateful to be here, capturing a slice of White Sands’ timeless charm. Even then, these gypsum crystals, glittering softly under the light, seemed to hold an otherworldly beauty. Looking through the viewfinder, I realized this horizon wasn’t just a line in the sand. Instead, it was a boundary between worlds. Here, earth meets sky in White Sands National Park, a reminder of nature’s quiet power and enduring mystery.
