The iconic Roswell Sign that welcomes you to UFO territory, does exactly that. This sign is not just an icon in the mysterious town of Roswell, New Mexico, it speaks a story. It’s the first thing you come across and it tells you, “You’ve arrived at the UFO capital of the world.”
When I arrived at the entrance in Roswell I realized that I had to take this shot. The green and red letters were clearly visible against the sky and looked especially bright. The overall design was fun with the flying saucer hovering above the sign that made me smile. Further, there were cattle silhouettes parading along the top line which gave almost a dream-like feel. It makes one to think about all the conspiracy theories and the Roswell crash site. In addition, the Roswell aliens’ tales have been surrounding this town for many years.
It took me a moment to get ready, aiming for a photo as larger-than-life as the Roswell sign itself. Framing it was key. With the flat desert surrounding it, I positioned my camera low to ensure the sign dominated the frame. I loved how the stickers on the base made it look more like an actual alien’s guide. To me, it looked like it represented the quirky and curious nature of Roswell perfectly.
Standing there, I wondered: Why do people keep coming to this place, and why is this sign so popular? It is not only the history or the stories about UFOs. It is the feeling of awe. The Roswell sign symbolizes much more than a location on a map or the state of New Mexico. Instead, it signifies a point where reality and the unknown blur together.
