Michigan is famous for many things, from their University’s successful football progam, to Detroit’s epicenter of the creation of the automobile and also Motown Records. Another thing every tourist knows about is the world famous fudge created on Michigan’s Mackinac Island. In addition to the main old town, the classic Hotel Iraquois built in 1902. Traveling by ferry one beautiful summer day, we had our required fudge treat, then set out to stroll through the historic hotel.
Watching over years of change and calm, what stories do the walls of an old hotel by the water hold? In this calm Mackinac Island retreat, Hotel Iroquois stands tall witnessing a world of leisure, tranquility and the natural landscape of Michigan.
I remember taking this shot on the dock with my camera while everything around me was so calm. I knew that Hotel Iroquois was the star of this moment. The magnificent structure and the design of the building made me want to see more and take pictures. The hotel seems to preserve not just the island but the tranquility that Mackinac always guarantees.
Hotel Iroquois is not just any hotel. For years, it’s been a perfect spot for tourists to take in Lake Huron’s beautiful lakeside setting. The white walls, well trimmed lawns, and cozy patios with umbrellas are some of the features that made it attractive. This hotel has a special way of embracing the waterfront, perched above the rocky shoreline. Its design appears to complement the lake, depicting luxury and at the same time, the natural elegance of Mackinac Island.
After taking the shot, I took a step back and understood that every aspect of this scene was planned. Hotel Iroquois is more than just a place to stay, but also a symbol of Mackinac Island’s soul, built into the coastline and inviting every visitor to become part of it.
I was given more than just a photo when I left that day. I felt I had captured a piece of history, perfectly preserved in the timeless beauty of Hotel Iroquois.
