Badlands National Park Sunset Over Pinnacles Prairie Rugged Terrain

Stone spires rise from soft prairie folds while a glowing sky pours gold across the horizon. The foreground ridges guide the eye toward the central peak, then out to the open plains and a ribbon of road that hints at distant travel. Darker clouds on the left give contrast to the warm light on the right, so the sculpted layers and grassy ledges stand out with depth and color.

I photographed this view from an overlook on the eastern side of the park, waiting as evening clouds drifted and a break of light opened near the horizon. When the sun slipped under the weather and touched the pinnacles, the scene balanced calm prairie with rugged rock. I framed a wide panorama to include the ledges at my feet, the central crown, and the sweep of sky that tells the story of the Badlands at day’s end.
