I always dreamed of visiting Yosemite National Park and capturing its beauty through my lens and Half Dome, in particular, was something I wanted to make a photo of.
This magnificent granite wonder rising 5,000 feet above the Yosemite Valley, with its unique shape and location, has become an iconic symbol of the park.
I woke up super early that morning, hours before sunrise, determined to take the best shot of the Half Dome. Although it was freezing cold, I was excited to embark on this journey. Brett and I drove up Glacier Point Road, not knowing whether the road would be closed because of the snow.
Fun fact: did you know that Glacier Point is famous for the area where President Theodore Roosevelt camped with John Muir, who was influential in the creation of many of the early national parks?
Luckily, Glacier Point was open, and driving to this place was definitely worth it. It has one of the most spectacular views in the park.
As we drove up to the spot, the view became more breathtaking. The sun had not yet risen. I was determined to get to the ideal spot before sunrise when its rays would hit the eastern side of the Half Dome, illuminating its beauty.
Finally, we reached the summit. The place I thought I would set up was covered with almost 6 inches of snow and because it was still dark, it was being very careful that me and my camera didn’t end up sliding down the mountain.
I was determined to find the best location to capture the sunrise on the incredible scene that was starting to come into view with the sun just about ready to make its way above the horizon. I needed to find a place where I could set up fast, before my opportunity was gone.
The colors were simply stunning, the warm oranges and yellows were threatening to replace the cool blues and greens.
Finally, I went around a group of trees and I found the perfect location. I got my camera set up and aimed it towards the Half Dome.
I wanted to capture the moment, to freeze this breathtaking sight in time.
I will never forget that freezing cold morning as I watched the sun kiss Half Dome. My feet were cold and wet, my fingers frozen from the early morning temperatures, but I got the shot!
I returned home with a sense of pride and satisfaction, knowing that I had captured the beauty of one of America’s natural wonders.
I have a large 3-panel canvas print of this scene hanging proudly on my office wall, a daily reminder of that unforgettable journey and the thrill of capturing the beauty of nature.
