Bridging Horizons

Bridging Horizons: Sunshine Skyway Bridge

A panoramic shot of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge brings the majestic view of this colossus into your living room or kitchen.

This mighty bridge, spanning all of 4.14 miles, has been connecting the communities of St. Petersburg and Terra Ceia for 35 years.

When you drive through this man-made wonder, the trip is a pleasure. Through the 4-mile drive, it feels like you are driving to the clouds as the road for the first half is inclined, making it look like you are going up the sky.

How this bridge works considering its length and where it’s situated makes me proud of humanity’s imagination and capacity to face challenges.

In spite of the the massive obstacles that faced them back in 1986 when they started building this bridge, plus the difficulties of the actual construction, the bridge was completed and opened to the public in 1987.

Looking at this bridge, I find similarities in that we are designed and meant to push beyond our limits and take on new challenges.

In fact, it is through difficult times that our strength is not only expressed, but is increased. Just imagine how many storms the Sunshine Skyway bridge had to weather, and how in the midst of it all it stood strong and continued to serve its purpose.

It is a beautiful bridge with a beautiful view. Just a friendly reminder that if you have a fear of heights, stay at the base. Drive straight up to the fishing spots and cast a line for grouper, black sea bass, red snapper, and other varieties.

Between the length and the height of this bridge, driving over the Sunshine Skyway is truly a marvelous experience!
