Few entertainers — save for, perhaps, Loretta Lynn — have stayed as closely connected to their roots as Dolly Parton did. The late country music icon was born and raised in East Tennessee’s Sevier County, and even after achieving global stardom, she consistently gave back to the breathtaking Great Smoky Mountains region that raised her. While Dolly’s efforts ranged from disaster relief and scientific research to education initiatives, one of the most visible reminders of her support is her popular Dollywood theme park. Parton originally shared her intent to open a theme park in the Pigeon Forge area in 1983, and the project was fast-tracked when she gained rights to restructure the existing Silver Dollar City amusement park into what is now Dollywood. It opened in 1986 after extensive renovations. Today, Dollywood and its Splash Country water park typically see more than 3 million visitors annually. Arrive earlier than you think you need to
Dollywood’s opening hours shift throughout the year depending on the season and special events. For instance, in September 2026, the park opens at 9 a.m. through the 13th, then begins opening an hour later at 10 a.m. for the rest of the fall season. Once you figure out the opening time is on the day you plan to visit, don’t make that your target arrival time.
