Approximately 0.009% of the total water on Earth is found in freshwater lakes. These bodies of water hold the vast majority of accessible surface water that humans can use. Most of the world’s lake water can be found in North America, Africa, and Asia, but lakes exist even in Antarctica beneath the ice sheets.
