The U.S. Senate adopted on Tuesday a measure that limits President Donald Trump’s war powers, requiring him to seek Congress’s approval for any future military action in Iran.
The measure was passed with 50 votes in favor and 47 against, marking a first in which Republican Senator Bill Cassidy voted alongside Democrats. This comes after the Senate previously rejected similar efforts seven times. The vote was influenced by the absences of some Republicans amid election campaigns, which reduces the chances of success for the measure in final adoption. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that Democrats will continue to push for votes on war powers. Although some Republicans argue that Congress should have a role in authorizing war, the majority did not insist on a formal vote.
