Avery Island, while not a traditional town, is a unique and secluded destination renowned as the birthplace of Tabasco sauce.
This privately owned island is home to the McIlhenny family and has a population that includes both residents and employees involved in the production of the famous hot sauce. Visitors can tour the Tabasco factory to learn about the sauce’s history and production process and explore the lush Jungle Gardens—a 170-acre semi-tropical garden featuring azaleas, camellias, and towering oaks draped in Spanish moss.
The island also serves as a wildlife sanctuary, providing habitats for numerous bird species, including snowy egrets in Bird City. Avery Island’s seclusion is due to its unique geographical formation—a salt dome island rising above the flat Louisiana marshes—and its limited access points, ensuring a peaceful retreat steeped in natural beauty and culinary history.
