White Sulphur Springs
Named after a series of natural hot mineral springs discovered there in 1866, White Sulphur Springs is another Off-the-Grid Montana town with a small population (less than 1000) that continues to operate as a trailhead access point to beautiful natural wonders in the greater area. Take a dip to stay warm in the colder months at the Spa Hot Springs Motel, which offers access to the pure, untreated geothermal springs that made the area famous. The North Fork Smith River also runs through town as a tributary of the Missouri River, providing trout fly-fishing opportunities. Just outside of town, in an old cattle pasture, make plans to attend the annual Red Ants Pants Music Festival, featuring the best of Montana vibes, the sounds of agricultural country, hosted completely by volunteer community efforts. Learn about the history of how the gold rushes of the 19th century brought more settlers west by visiting the Castle Museum, constructed by successful rancher and miller, Byron Roger Sherman, in 1892, a unique building made of hand-cut granite blocks that were pulled from nearby mountains by horse-drawn carriages.
