There is something captivating about standing beneath a pier as the day comes to an end. Most people admire a pier from above, watching the waves roll in or the sun sink below the horizon. But sometimes the most compelling perspective is found underneath, where repeating beams, towering pilings, and reflections create patterns that often go unnoticed.
That unique perspective recently earned one of my photographs, Beneath the Shadows of San Clemente Pier, 3rd Place in the ViewBug Leading Lines Photo Contest.
Looking at a Familiar Landmark Differently
San Clemente Pier is one of Southern California’s most photographed landmarks. Thousands of visitors capture it from the beach or while strolling along the wooden deck. I wanted something different.
By moving beneath the pier and positioning myself so the support columns naturally guided the eye toward the setting sun, the scene transformed into something entirely new. The repeating structure became a series of strong leading lines, drawing the viewer deeper into the image until everything converged at the bright burst of sunlight on the horizon.
Rather than focusing only on the sunset, the photograph celebrates the architecture itself and the way light interacts with it.
Why Leading Lines Matter
Leading lines are one of the most powerful tools in photography. They naturally guide a viewer’s eyes through a scene, creating depth and movement within a still image.
In this photograph, nearly every element contributes to that journey:
- The rows of pier pilings lead toward the sunset.
- The overhead beams frame the scene with repeating patterns.
- The reflections in the wet sand continue the visual flow.
- Even the incoming waves help carry your eye toward the center of the composition.
Together, these elements create an image that invites viewers to explore rather than simply glance at it.
Timing Was Everything
While composition was essential, timing played an equally important role.
The sun had dropped to just the right position to create a brilliant starburst between the pilings. Warm golden light illuminated the horizon while the darker structure of the pier created dramatic contrast. The gentle surf left a reflective surface across the sand, doubling the lines and enhancing the symmetry.
Moments like these are brief. A few minutes earlier or later, and the image would have looked entirely different.
An Honor from the ViewBug Community
Receiving 3rd Place in the ViewBug Leading Lines Photo Contest is especially meaningful because the competition focused on composition rather than simply beautiful scenery.
It is always rewarding to know that an image resonates with fellow photographers who appreciate the technical and creative decisions behind a photograph.
Photography is often about slowing down, looking beyond the obvious, and discovering perspectives that many people walk past without noticing.
