Bull Elk in Alpine Wildflowers

Bull Elk in Alpine Wildflowers

High on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, I spotted this bull elk easing across a slope still patched with spring snow. Yellow wildflowers dotted the tundra and a cool wind carried that mix of pine and cold rock you only get above treeline. I pulled over, kept a respectful distance, and settled the long lens on a beanbag over the car window so I wouldn’t disturb him.

He paused just long enough to lift his head, velvet antlers catching the soft overcast light. The only sounds were the shutter clicks and the low scrape of his hooves on loose gravel. I waited for his body to angle with the hill so the line of his back echoed the incline and the flowers framed his legs. One clean frame, then he moved on.

This photograph brings a piece of Colorado’s high country into your space: strong, earthy tones, fresh greens, and that single powerful animal set against a textured alpine backdrop. It fits a lodge-style living room, an office that needs a touch of wilderness, or a cabin that celebrates the West. Prints are produced through my professional lab on premium photo paper, with canvas, metal, and acrylic options available so you can match your style and space.
